Education is an important part of UMA's on-going activities. UMA contracts with the National Energy Foundation (NEF) to deliver UMA's education program.
We have a major educational effort in the Utah public school system where we educate teachers, particularly fourth grade teachers, about geology, location of minerals in the state and the various essential uses of minerals in student's everyday lives. This program titled, "Out of the Rock", helps satisfy the natural science curriculum required in the fourth grade in Utah elementary schools.
The UMA Education Program includes teacher workshops in counties around the state. During 2006 the Utah Mining Association, in its 16th year of the "Out of the Rock" Mineral Resource and Mining Education Program, provided training and/or materials support to approximately 2800 Utah teachers. An additional 3200 participants were reached through community events and a total estimate of 107,000 students were impacted.
In addition, UMA has a booth during the Utah Education Association (UEA) Convention at the Salt Palace in Salt Lake City. Approximately 400 teachers visit the booth, taking various materials and samples of coal mined in Utah.
UMA has also participated in several educational-related conferences to further the understanding of the importance of mining in the world. |
