Join with us to make a strong mining industry in Utah   /  Membership Information / Member List

Welcome . . .

Mining supports the very foundation of our economy. From the stone and gravel used to build roads and lay foundations for homes and buildings, to coal and uranium used to generate more than half of the nation's electricity, to the copper wire that connects billions of computers to a global social and commercial network, our economy and way of life depend on the vital resources provided by mining.

The Utah Mining Association (UMA), established in 1915, helps to promote and protect the mining industry. UMA provides its members with full-time professional industry representation before the State Legislature; various government regulatory agencies on the federal, state and local levels; other associations, and business and industry groups.

Education in mining and minerals is encouraged to further the understanding of the role this critical industry and its products play in people's lives, and to foster a spirit of community cooperation.

ACTION ALERT

No Unilateral Withdrawal of Uranium Mining in Arizona
Support Alternative A – No Withdrawal

Secretary of the Interior, Ken Salazar, imposed a two-year segregation or “time out” on all new claims, exploration drilling and mine development on more than 1 million acres in northern Arizona.

The purported purpose of the segregation was to “study” the problem “to protect the Grand Canyon watershed from adverse effects of locatable hard rock mineral exploration and mining” (Federal Register Notice, July 21, 2009).  A Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) was finally released in February 2011.

This massive 900 + page document ostensibly details the environmental, economic and social impacts of uranium mining on the region, but fails to corroborate any of the adverse effects detractors had claimed.  Click for DEIS.

A permanent withdrawal would have a severely negative impact on the economies of northern Arizona and southern Utah as well as rob the U.S. of a rich uranium resource that can dramatically reduce our dependence on foreign imports.

We need your help.  Please take a minute of your time to send a strong message to the Bureau of Land Management and Congress that you oppose any kind of withdrawal of lands in northern Arizona and that you strongly support Alternative A – No Withdrawal.

There are two websites already set up to send e-mails to the indivuals who need to receive the information that you support "Alternative A - No Withdrawal." They are:

American Clean Energy Resources Trust and Northwest Mining Association

You may edit the e-mail text to indivualize it or leave it as is and just put in your personal information and then submit and it will go to the appropriate people.
