LET THE UTAH MINING ASSOCIATION GO TO WORK FOR YOU

For 92 years, UMA has worked diligently with all facets of the economy to strengthen jobs, build a sound and balanced tax base, help provide for education, and foster opportunities for growth. These on-going efforts require the help and support of Utah's entire mining industry.

Why support UMA? The answer is simple: no other state organization has done more to promote the interests of Utah's mining industry through education, legislative leadership, and regulatory participation.

Education: A Reawakening of Public Consent

Despite paying the highest wages of any other sector and providing 40% of Utah's annual exports, Utah's mining industry continues to be undervalued by the public and policymakers alike.

Jack Gerard, former president of the National Mining Association (NMA) said:
"The reawakening of [public] consent will require change in the way the industry and its component industries have tended to think and act in public affairs. . . . It requires involvement and engagement at every level in the continuing struggle to establish and maintain public consent. We have to recognize that the struggle is unending. The struggle is about reputation, or image, not reform. It means going to the trouble to speak out when and where you'd rather not."

For over a decade, UMA has partnered with the National Energy Foundation (NEF) to provide accurate instructional materials and meaningful training seminars for Utah's elementary and secondary school teachers. At the heart of UMA's Education Program are regional educator training workshops. The distribution of positive mining information at teacher trainings and booths to over 1,560 Utah educators and to 2,500 parents and students means that UMA's Education Program for 2005 potentially impacted 70,060 Utah school children.

No other organization is doing more to build greater understanding and public consent of Utah's mining industry than UMA. Your support will help ensure UMA's education efforts continue.

Legislative Leadership: Providing Credible Data and Testimony

The Utah Mining Association is recognized by legislators from both sides of the aisle as one of the state's most influential business organizations. UMA representatives review and track dozens of bills each year on topics ranging from taxes & fees to environmental and health & safety regulation to access to public lands. UMA offers expert testimony before legislative committees and commissions and provides credible data which cut through the political hyperbole. Few organizations command such respect on Utah's Capitol Hill.

Ultimately, however, UMA's ability to effectively represent Utah's mining industry is dependent on its ability to speak on behalf of all mining companies and the companies which service them. Lawmakers listen to representatives of companies which employ their constituents, pay their wages, and provide a tax base to support their communities' services.

Regulatory Participation: Speaking with the Voice of Industry

In addition to representation in the legislative arena, UMA is actively involved in Utah's many regulatory bodies which oversee mining operations. UMA has a strong working relationship with the Utah Division of Oil, Gas & Mining and has aggressively represented the interests of Utah's mining industry before the Board of Oil, Gas & Mining. In addition, UMA actively participates in the nomination process of Board members which helps ensure that the Board has the expertise necessary to reach sound, fair decisions.

The natural resources industries and the service companies which support them face an onslaught of federal regulations and restrictions which have fundamentally damaged not only the mining industry but also this State's future economic viability. That is why Utah's mining industry must stand up and speak in a voice so strong and clear and direct it cannot be ignored.

How can we counter these powerful interests? Your decision to strengthen efforts to make Utah's mining industry's voice stronger by joining UMA will ensure that the industry will continue to match our opponents' commitment. Your membership will make a difference.
